NUTRITION AND HYDRATION INSERVICEThe more we educate ourselves the more we can educate and monitor our clients on nutrition and hydration issues. Everywhere you turn these days you see something about getting healthy and making good choices in our diet, but yet only Street Address % of us eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables daily, and 65% of us of overweight and that number is growing! Most illness, such as hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, can be improved with diet modifications, so lets learn some things about basic nutrition! The definition of Nutrition is the science of food, how the body uses it, and how food keeps the body healthy. Our nutrition affects how we grow and how our brain functions, it also helps us fight of diseases.We all grew up with the basic food groups and the food pyramid, but did you realize that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) replaced the old food pyramid with a new one?The new food pyramid in more individually based according to gender, age, and activity level. It encourages some sort of daily exercise along with the nutritional guidelines. The food groups are as follows:1. GRAINS - examples would be whole grain bread or brown rice 2. VEGTABLES - come in a variety of colors3. FRUITS - try to stick to whole fruits, not just fruit juice 4. OILS - fish, nuts, vegetable oils, try to limit solid fats like butter margarine, lard, shortening.5. MILK - or other calcium fortified foods6. MEATS OR BEANS - lean meats, chicken, fish, beans, peas, nuts, seeds, protein. And of course at least 30 minutes of exercise every day! It is up to us, as Healthcare Providers to to do the research and try to figure out the cause of decrease in appetite. Some potential reasons your clients may have a decrease in appetite may include: By age 60, we are likely to have lost half of our taste buds, so most likely a lot of foods that used to taste good, just dont anymore. Temperatures of the food just arent right, either to hot, or to cold. Dentures dont fit properly Not happy with diet that Doctor has prescribed Are they confused that they are not able to buy, cook, or eat the meals? Are they in pain? Are they afraid of choking? Do they not have the money to pay for food? Is this a change in eating habits you need to report? Is this a new illness such as a cold? Have they started a new medication that has affected their appetite? HYDRATIONWater makes up 2/3 of the bodys weight. Every cell in our body needs water in order to survive and do its job.If needed our bodies could actually survive weeks without food, but only days without water, that is how important water is to our survival! Every one of our bodily functions uses water, including maintaining our body temperature within the normal range.We need to drink 8-10 glasses of fluid (preferably water) a day. We can also get water from foods that we eat! Did you know that fruits and vegetables are more than 90% water?If you get DEHYDRATED, it means, your body is not getting enough water to work properly. In fact this is the most common cause for the elderly to be hospitalized. Remember that in the warmer days and months that we need extra fluids! Lets face it, when the diet is poor, the body will not work as it should. The body needs a good diet and fluids in order to work properly.. They will get weak, and not be able to fight off infection or illness.
