This internship included many different responsibilities. First, a team of volunteer students needed to be found so they could aid the urban planning process. After that, the position maintained that it was important to present the current project to the County Commissioners for approval. The intern had help ensure that the County Commission would approve of any changes the team made to the plans and explain why the team felt it necessary to do such changes. The intern had to then lead a team of volunteers and communicate between them to organize meetings, trips and share vital information.Research and Design with Dr. James Inedu and Dr. Donna CohenMarch 2019 May 2019I took part in a research project that focused on a collaboration effort to work with another university to design a structure that would function in sister cities from the countries we come from. Namely, Micanopy in Florida, USA, and Durum Nigeria were regions we agreed with Dr. James Inedu and Dr. Cohen to design an eco-structure for. We took notice as to what the cities had in common and how they were different and what we would have to keep in mind when designing this structure and what the people in the area need to help them. We created an energy tower that had a water turbine, solar panels, a water basin, and a fog water harvester. We presented our work to a committee and worked on getting published in the Vorkurs: Volume 4 under the title of Energy for Africa: Micro-Grids for Sister Cities.Research with the Florida Resiliency ProjectJanuary 2020 May 2020Another research project I took part in was a study concerning the repair and revitalization of the city of Port St. Joe and the cities along the Florida panhandle. My group visited the city and took part in creating a comprehensive city plan. The purpose of this study was to collect data on the Florida panhandles resiliency as it recovered from Hurricane Michael. Our group proposed an innovative design for the storm water system as well as city programs to foster community and connection. I used this as an opportunity to use ArcGIS to map the flood prone areas in the city and log where the most damage had taken place. We were meant to return and present our findings to the Port St. Joe city commission, unfortunately, the outbreak of COVID-19 had disrupted those plans. We worked with several professors such as Jeff Carney, Architecture, Tim Mclendon, Law - Corene Matyas, CLAS Richard Stepp, CLAS - David Prevatt, Engineering Alyson Larson, Journalism.Internship with Belina Meador at Community Weatherization CoalitionJanuary 2022 January 2023This was an internship at the CWC part of the Neighborhood Housing & Development Corporation, where I used ArcGIS and QGIS to map the homes in their jurisdiction and writing a Python program that would automatically find which homes qualified for which program. I have also overseen the training of new volunteers and creating succession documents. I have also reached out to the city in order to receive newer boundaries, maps and zoning/land use codes. I also use information from the mapping programs to find trends such as which specific regions have been struggling with specific problems like faulty electrical wiring.FreelanceJanuary 2024 OngoingAs soon as I graduated, I took part in several freelance opportunities including drawing maps for an engineer in Tampa named Abdul Waris. I provided several boundary maps for him and his client to help find the borders of a property and find its land use designation. I also worked with a planner named Kirk to create graphics for a presentation. I designed several graphics using a combination of photoshop, Revit and Rhino. |
