What we were doing: we decided to automate sales and orders for pharmacies (eventually it was 1 pharmacy chain with 5 local pharmaciesand ended up with 2500 pharmacies)1. We had a Vision of what needs to be done (what we are going to automate in general).
 - First - pharmacies: sales point automation (till), production automation (preparing a medicine) and order automation. - Second - Headoffice: combine all orders from pharmacies, create Total order and collect offers from supplies for that order. - Third - Reporting and Analyses: tons of reports, ABC Analysis, accounting documentation, contract control with supplies. - Fourth (potentially): Management (Prediction of Sales, Price management from head office, automatic order from pharmacy (restocking), "quality" control of supplies)
2. I created a data flow (Logical) diagram, what document is coming from and where it goes to, what requisites and parameters are, who is responsible for the quality of the document, does it have sensitive data. Spent a LOT of time sitting with Pharmacists, Warehouse Managers, Accounters, Marketologists, Business Analytics, Supplier's workers and CEO to find out what data we can use and what data needs to be added into the system for further use.3. At that point we implemented that system on MS SQL Server 2000, then upgraded (recoded) to MS SQL Server 2005, created metadata of documents, forms, schemas, prepare the main dictionary and single source of truth
