Ive been a part of Austins medical community for 15 years. From dietary to emergency services, inpatient and outpatient settings, my desire to care for people has allowed me to explore the healthcare system and given me a unique ability to effectively interact with patients and their families as they work to understand their health and the impact it has on their day to day lives. So far, I have worked on different multidisciplinary teams for three networks and used several EMRs. I have worked at the bedside as well as out in the community and collaborated with an array of community partners/resources. I believe in using a proactive research-based approach when it comes to patients health and their potential for better outcomes. My interest in this position comes from my past experience working with patients with low health literacy and my desire to help them as they navigate their way through the medical system. I believe in working to improve a patients social situation so that they can put more focus on their health, supporting someone in an outpatient setting will keep them from returning to inpatient.Through the years I have seen how negative experiences can discourage someone from seeking the healthcare they need. After hours in the ED or multiple days of admission, patients leave the hospital feeling frustrated and confused, not having gained any understanding of their health problems or how to manage them. Between long wait times and negative interactions with staff they are reluctant to seek help in the future. I would like to be the person to help bridge the gap between patients and their health care teams, in doing so they will see how effective we can be when we work together. |
