PHONE NUMBER AVAILABLEI am seeking a position as a nurse. I have 24 years experience, with 8 years psych, 12 years long term care and 4 years med-surg. Most recently Ive worked part-time in LTC. Ive worked for Rapid Temps, a nurse staffing company, The job before I was a charge nurse on a closed acute adult inpatient psych unit for 5 years at Wabash Valley Mental Hospital, Lafayette, which ended in 2009, due to downsizing, became not a safe place to work I have been CPI certified but unfortunately no current certificates. Ive worked Psych in Indiana as well as New Mexico. I have always been a patient advocate, only the least amount of medication or physical interventions am I willing to apply. However there are times when clients have become so very violent that they were in seclusion until medication became effective. At New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute, there was one night that was challenging, the units were across from each other with a closed recreational area between, with only 1 seclusion room on each. It so happened that there was 2 seclusions at the same time and a code. I ran back and forth and kept notes, which was a most demanding 2 hours. This episode reminds me that I can prioritize, delegate and multi-task during chaos. I enjoy being able to provide assurance, and a nurturing atmosphere to clients with mental illness. Mental illness is a disease as any other. If they had Diabetes society would not treat them the way most do, even today in our enlightened age, there is still present a social stigmatism that exists.
