Conducts continuing efforts to solve problems that have stubbornly resisted resolution. Detecting discrepancies in results and identifying deviations. Keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potentially controversial problems, concerns, and issues. Inspections of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAA) are completed Bi-yearly for over 60 sites on base to make sure they are storing Hazardous/pharmaceutical Waste correctly.Coordinates meetings with personnel and has oversight on all SAA sites. Prepares routine reports with collected data of inspections. Logs Waste Information Sheets (WIS) from all assigned sites. Reviews completed work closely to verify accuracy and conformance to required procedures and waste management plan. Distributes by email the designated waste streams to all SAA operators to ensure all waste is labeled and disposed of properly. Answers questions from personnel and recommends appropriate resource management strategies.Approves all Hazardous Material (HM) that can be used on base, recommends pollution prevention measures. Reviews data in a timely manner.Responds to oil spills on base while coordinating with higher authorities. Conducts oversight on oil/fuel transfers.Instructor for SAA operator qualification classes. Presents power point slide presentations to classes and groups to educate on how to label and store waste properly, including reporting oil spills and overall knowledge of environmental concerns on base.Works on boat or by waders in the Hood canal throughout the year during any adverse weather conditions, high wind, low or high temperatures to collect water samples for Department of Health by taking saline readings and temperature at six different points. These samples are tested for fecal matter and monitors the water quality along tribal shellfish beaches within base boundaries.Walks through uneven marshy terrain, wades through estuary stream, hikes up and down steep wetland basin with poisonous insects, plants to collect and record data for birds, vegetation, habitat and water quality for scientific analysis and US Army Corps of Engineers(US ACOE) Ecosystem Restoration and Monitoring requirements for Cattail Wetland Restoration project. Salinity samples are taken to determine the extent of tidal inundation and influence in forming salt marsh condition. Takes photo points seasonally to track the restoration progress. Records presence of wildlife as evidence towards habitat restoration and usage including beaver, river otter, cougar activity, etc. Monitors for salmonid presence as part of a goal is to restore salmonid usage of the estuary. Monitoring salmonid presence and usage for Endangered Species Act compliance. This includes entering in data in the Cattail Monitoring database and writing annual monitoring reports for submission to US ACOE. Completed restoration planting and oversight of contractors installing 8,000 trees and shrubs in the basin.Driving a vehicle through constricted Navy Dry Docks to identify and document all local endangered species for fish surveys that must be completed each time after dry dock is drained of water.Coordinate with local tribal members and natural resources managers of boat movement and to conduct shellfish surveys/harvests at Naval Base Kitsap Bangor tribal beaches.
