My team proposed a weld process repair, but it would require extremely difficult welding technique, and a new reverse polarity cleaning process that I invented. Multiple welding technicians were tested, and I was the only technician capable of passing the required tests before being allowed to weld on the flight hardware. I performed the required welds, which passed inspections, and successfully repaired the cracks. I repaired all 4 shuttles, which were able to fly several missions before the shuttle program ended in 2010.
