Continuous improvement opportunities were thought to be minimal in the mature network, but$3-$5mm of annual benefit was generated by implementing strategic transportation changes. Drove transportation cost as a percent of cost of goods sold (COGS) from upwards of 14% to below 10%.Boxcar Modal Execution: Negotiated boxcar rates from Monterrey, MX to LA and Baltimore DCs. Engineered Boxcar load plans, inclusive of dunnage & load securement, incorporating boxcar mode into the distribution channels, utilizing idle rail spur assets at the Monterrey plant. Yielded badly needed capacity as well as cost reductions.Heavyweight Ocean Services: Engaged trans-gulf barge transportation for high volume shipments from Monterrey to the eastern US using Brownsville-Port Manatee port pairing. Sealed Container regulations in Florida provided an increase in laden weight from 43k lbs to 57k lbs from Monterrey origin to South Florida DC. Combination of reducing length of haul and increasing laden weight yielded a 45% reduction in logistics cost/ton. Routings to other key eastern US/CN locations via a transloaded heavyweight operation provided additional network benefits in cost & capacity availability.Collaborative Transportation Operations: Leveraging high volume FTL movements from Mexico to LA, Chicago, Dallas, Miami, and Baltimore, collaborated with external supply chains improve capacity utilization in cross-border lanes. Utilizing a 3PL to identify/source compatible low-density commodities, a co-loading strategy was developed to fill vacant cube on Daltile dispatches, increasing capacity utilization by 35%. Provided open book cost modeling to strengthen the collaborative relationships. The strategy was entered in the CSCMP/SupplyChainBrain innovation competition, earning 1st place from 49 Supply Chain innovation entries. Additional recognition was received from across the Supply Chain industry.DC to Store Load Factor: Internal analysis illustrated loads dispatched from DC to Store in multi-stop service that were > 1,000 lbs short of maximum weight capacity. A program was implemented to supplement these non-compliant loads with class A SKUs, effectively pre-positioning high-volume inventory at no additional cost.
