The Division has a workforce of over 500, with 435+ faculty members who are known for their outstanding research, teaching and patient care.The Division conducts its activities at the UW Medical Center (UWMC-Montlake and Northwest), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), and the VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS) and VA Boise, with research sites located at multiple sites across Seattle. GIM has faculty in seven academic primary care clinics as well as in neighborhood clinics located across the Puget Sound, and manages inpatients at four Seattle area hospitals.GIM is the largest division in the Department of Medicine and includes both clinical and research functions with a total annual budget of over $100m. There are over 30 research faculty with 85 staff, 125 current grant, contract and gift budgets and annual research expenses of $15 million per year. Faculty and staff are spread over 10+ sites around Seattle and the Puget Sound as well as in Boise, Idaho.The Division of General Internal Medicine in the Department of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Research Consultant.The purpose of this position is to lead and contribute to data extraction, harmonization, quality assurance, and visualization including development of semi-automated procedures using widely used languages, such as R, Python, or similar for data visualization, manipulation, and cleaning, in order to lead and support standardized and documented data quality, transformation and maintenance within our coordinating centers. Our research group leads coordinating centers, including extensive data management, for large multisite collaboratives focused on HIV, substance use and other epidemiological and clinical human health-related research.This position is for an individual who can lead work focused on development and modernization of data-related activities for HIV SUCCESS, the coordinating center for the NIDA HIV and Substance Use cohorts, and is willing to support similar activities across other important research programs, including the CFAR Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS). These cohorts provide research data to support important, cutting-edge analyses related to health and well-being of marginalized populations including people with HIV and people who use substances that can inform interventions to support health equity. In-depth understanding, knowledge, correct use, maintenance and quality assessment of these data are critical to these health research activities.RESPONSIBILITIES:Data Analytics (60%) Develop code in a standard programming language for data wrangling and visualization such as R, Python, Julia or similar to visualize, extract, harmonize and conduct quality assessment checks on both original data from the HIV SUCCESS cohorts and specific datasets built for different analyses. SAS may be acceptable depending on experience with high level SAS graphics. Develop code for extracting and transforming data from the HIV SUCCESS cohorts to build analysis databases. Clearly annotate all code so that it is reproducible by others. Maintain code version control utilizing modern tools, such as GitHub and similar to allow for version checking and roll back of code. Communicate clearly about concerns, issues or other matters discovered in the data with diverse teams in order to find a resolution or understand the data. Clearly document all data findings.Data Coordination and Integration (25%) Supporting and training others and/or working with other data coordinating projects to develop scripts for visualizing, extracting, transforming, and conducting quality reviews on data. Bringing code together to form logical semi-automated serial processes to ensure reproducible high-quality data for epidemiological analyses. Demonstrating and documenting how utilized the code developed to core analytics and data managers on the team. Troubleshoot data-related issues, concerns and problems.Other Duties (15%) Presenting work and findings from data assessments to the research team. Advising on data-related processing for cohorts or sites that contribute data to the coordinating and or/data centers. Depending on interests and training level, writing publishable software packages and/or peer-reviewed manuscripts related to work activities. Standard working hours with some flexibility to be expected. Occasionally, as time sensitive issues arise, working earlier, later or longer hours may be necessary, with the ability to flexibly recover time on another day.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:MA in computer programming/science, health-related, epidemiology, statistics, sociology, demography or other related field plus 2 years of experience to include working with large, complex data sets.Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: This position requires significant knowledge and capability in programming and architecture design for semi-automated processes to clean, manage, harmonize and assess the quality of source datasets as well as derived datasets for specific analyses. The postholder will be required to have significant experience and/or training in programming and documenting in common computer languages for health-related data and data management and handling. Ability to understand and adapt to end user needs is imperative. Prior experience with data visualization, quality assessment, and evaluation of large human health/biological datasets required. Excellent verbal and written communication. Must be detail orientedDESIRED: Prior work with clinical or epidemiological datasets. Knowledge or experience with developing data processing pipelines or a desire to learn this skillset.
