Children and youth participate in educational programs, drug/alcohol and violence prevention programs, after school sports teams and a five-week summer camp. There is also a division that provides commercial sewing, landscaping and cleaning services. Throughout its 50 years, EECM has struggled financially and was in serious difficulty when I took over. Key accomplishments in first 42 months: Reorganized management and reviewed operations for cost efficiencies, resulting in over $500,000 savings/year. Converted all financial data and reporting back to MIP fund accounting software; completed 3 audits and 990s in one year; closed books on a monthly basis and distributed reports to operations staff for review. Paid off a $2 million line of credit and instituted loan policy to minimize interest costs. Rented excess space to three mission-similar nonprofits (412 Food Rescue, Repair the World, Catapult Pittsburgh). Initiated a 3-year strategic planning process, including reimagining the EECM mission, with an outside consultant. Restructured homeless services to increase number of beds and better serve population in need (there is a waiting list). This requires reconfiguring space to best serve the clientele and maximize revenues. Took on the bookkeeping for two additional nonprofits with excess capacity in the finance department, adding additional revenue of over $130,000 and diversifying revenue streams.
