He served as a research administrator at the National Institute of Education in Washington, DC, and held various faculty positions at Howard University, University of Maine at Augusta, Fayetteville State University, North Carolina Central University, and Florida A&M University. Dr. Chambers retired in 2014 following 24 years as a tenured professor of psychology at Florida A&M University. His academic training and research are in the areas of health psychology, research design and statistical analyses. He has been awarded more than 8.5 million dollars in research support and his two research interests are stress management and HIV/AIDS. The stress research examines the constellation of factors that are associated with how people cope with stress and the impact stress has on physical and mental health. The HIV/AIDS research examines risk factors for HIV transmission in United State and the Republic of South Africa.Dr. Chambers has served as a consulting editor for a number of research journals including, Ethnicity and Disease, Journal of Black Psychology, Journal of Health Disparities, Research and Practice, Cultural Diversity & Ethic Minority Psychology, Annals of African-Centered Psychology, and Florida A&M University McNair Journal,. He has also served on research review panels for the National Institute of Mental, National Institute of Child Health and Development, and the Institute of General Medical Sciences.
