Specifically, management and leadership practice, strategy, ethics, and organizational behavior of athletic management.TEACHING PHILOSOPHYI embrace the learning theories of Tolman, Thorndike, and Piaget (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 2011). Like Thorndike I believe that students are like a blank slate and that my initial interaction with them set the stage for how they are going to learn the topic. It is my constant reference to how easy it will be for them to learn it and my high availability to help them. For example, when I teach an Athletic coaching fundamentals course, I provide a with a lesson plan that shows all of the concepts and tasks that I will be demonstrating in class. The students can refer to the presentation later in the semester. I also incorporate Piagets description of the first stage of learning and translate it into adult learning theory through Interpretive epistemology through the socialization in groups. I ask students to work with their teammates for clarification on tasks and concepts before coming back to me so that they learn by teaching each other. Finally, Tolmans theory of purposive behaviorism (Knowles, Holton, & Swanson, 2011) connects the elemental and holistic philosophies by espousing the principle that behavior should have a purpose and be controlled towards a targeted end point. Once the student has been sparked with and interest in the subject, it is imperative that they be scaffolded into higher order thinking about the topic. The way that I do this is by constantly (repetition) referring them to the library database of peer reviewed articles for a deeper understanding of the subject matter. My goal is for them to develop good research methods as a vehicle to learn more in the future.TEACHING EXPERIENCEPierce College, Tacoma, WAAdjunct Faculty 2013 - 2017HSCI 228 First Aid and CPR for the Heath Care ProfessionalCourse designed to teach those with a duty to act the skills needed to respond appropriately to breathing and cardiac emergencies.
