DuPont Cellulosic Ethanol, 59219 Lincoln Highway, Nevada, IA, 50201
Lab Manager May 2016- September 2016
Quality: Instituted Reliability and Reproducibility testing on all lab equipment. Instituted SOPs for all procedures and equipment.
Process Optimization: Helped trouble shoot and find cause of iron incursion in greensands. Helped identify best practices and redesigned chemical injection feed for the cooling towers to eliminate further corrosion issues.
Lab Optimization: Reorganized Main lab in order to move offsite lab into main lab, reducing logistical issues with staffing, sample moving, and safety. Also found new methods/equipment that would do current procedures more accurately and more safely.
ASTM/TTB/EPA: Went over all relevant ATSM/TTB/EPA regulations to ensure all our sampling and testing was done in compliance with the various governing boards. Also started proper procedures for sample retention protocols, as well as all the appropriate TTB requirements for sample ports, and sample handling. Found new fuel ethanol requirements starting in 2017 and made sure our facility would be in compliance.
Lab set up: Ensured all needed equipment was set up correctly and tested to ensure accuracy. Included making sure autoclave received proper plant steam, as well as identifying gaps in the lab/plant needs and fixing them with new procedures or equipment.
Pattison Sand Company/ Eco Products Limited; 701 1st St. Clayton, IA 52049 May 2014- current
Lab Manager/Sr. Chemist May 2014- May 2016
R&D: Helped test and formulate new product to increase reactivity and reduce cost. Made numerous iterations of product and tested it in various states to optimize the products. Co-developed and patented a new method of removing phosphorus and other contaminated from water streams
Quality: Insured all testing was done to EPA/Standard Methods to ensure accuracy, repeatability and for to create standard data for our customers to use.
Lab Set Up: Set up 2 labs with proper equipment, reagents, and staff. Created SOP s for staff to follow for testing and sampling. Also help set up and run a trailer scale demonstration unit
Training: Trained new personnel on how to use various lab equipment and techniques, including but not limited to proper glass ware cleaning, Ion Chromatography, colorimetery/photo spectrometry, titrations, data recording, GMP, and numerous others.
Project leads: Looked through numerous sources to find projects for our company to bid.
Lincolnway Energy; 59511 W. Lincoln Hwy Nevada, IA 50201 2008- April 2014
Lab Supervisor March 2009-April 2014
Quality: Oversaw the purchase and use of lab equipment in a 60 MGY ICM/Fagen dry grind ethanol facility. Tested final products to ensure quality standards. Calibrated equipment as needed along with needed repairs. Championed better technologies such as NIR to more accurately gather needed data, as well as open up new testing possibilities that were previously unavailable/unreliable. Created a computer spreadsheet system to better track test results as they are received and better compare against historical data.
Process Optimization: Worked with production on many projects to increase production volumes and decrease production cost. Discovered an error in the ethanol certification reporting process that once corrected, led to increased production and increased revenue per gallon produced. Worked with numerous vendors on trials and experiments to increase production or to capture/increase other co-product revenue streams. Helped several ISU research projects from various departments, including one that is now at pilot plant scale at Lincolnway. Guided team leaders to a better understanding of lab result data, so they could make better process decisions. Researched new technologies that could improve plant yield and lower production cost, such as inline yeast/bacterial counters and inline carbohydrate instruments to better monitor fermentation and detect issues sooner. Met with several groups and vendors to vet technologies/ideas. Mined data to find best case practices to increase yields. Looked for ways to reduce infection frequency.
Public Relations: Lead Tour guide; given tours to members of the USDA, EPA, a member of the US Senate and his invited diplomats from various nations, as well as several British MP, Secretaries of Agriculture from various nations. Have given numerous newspaper/magazine/television tours/interviews. Given tours to current and prospective investors to show the value of their potential investments.
Reporting Recorded and filed Waste Water Monthly Outfall Reports (WWMOR) to the Iowa DNR. Maintained MSDS files and created computerized MSDS system for easier MSDS retrieval. Tested and logged GHG emissions from onsite biogas production system.
Training: Attended NABC Short course, NABC Technical Symposium, Midland Scientific Ethanol Lab Manager s Conference, Novozyme s Advanced Lab training, Shimadzu technical training for GC/HPLC, Phibro Fermentation and infection training, Excel advanced course, Metrohm IC course. Also attended a MSW to Biofuels conference, a new and growing industry.
Mentoring: Trained lab tech and production techs on proper lab techniques and testing protocols. Encouraged questions and helped explain the principles of our process to help the tech have better grasp the concepts. Encouraged additional training and courses to help further tech s knowledge and help them create networks of peers and outside the plant resources. Revised and reviewed all SOP s with techs to freshen up their skills and answer any questions they may have about a procedure, and to make the SOP s more accessible to the Tech s
Legal: Deposed for on ongoing patent lawsuit. Used my knowledge and plant data to make my companies case in the deposition.
R & D: Trained on patent law, to help with new plant R and D focus. Set up experiments to prove and disprove ideas that were being vetted for new process in the plant. Acquired new equipment or retrofitted old equipment or other items to be able to fully test out new R and D ideas.
Lab Tech 2 Feb 2008-2009
Quality: Calibrated lab equipment and fixed them as issues arose. Test final product to ensure proper quality. Check and make standards and reagents as needed by use or expiration dates.
Environmental: Tested outfall water to ensure compliance with state regulations, corrected process when compliance was threatened.
Testing: Test plant water/steam system to ensure no corrosion was present and to maintain correct water treatment. Also ran various tests to ensure lab equipment was calibrated correctly. Helped other techs how to properly run the test they were running.
Data: Took old data that wasn t in a computerized form and input it into a spreadsheet. This helped to look at trends during past experiments and under other specific conditions. This led to better predictions on how to run the process under similar circumstances.
