ACADEMIC PROJECTS
Feathercycle (Senior Project) Fall 2014 Spring 2015
Garnered 1st Place in the Senior Design Competition within the Mechanical Engineering Department by researching, designing, testing, and manufacturing a feathercycle in collaboration with a team of 7 other student colleagues; budget for the project was $2,400.
Recreated the Yamaha YZ 125 dirt bike by incorporating bicycle components to reduce weight by over 50% and enabling greater maneuverability and ease of handling.
Executed extensive research and design activities; included learning comprehensive information regarding vehicle and motorcycle dynamics to identify the geometric configuration of a trail bike.
Eliminated the potential for excess resources while closely monitoring the budget to ensure adequate funds for procurement of materials such as carbon fiber and balsa wood for the frame.
Designed a comprehensive model employing SOLIDWORKS; completed FEA on each component and altered the design to meet a safety factor of less than 5.
Produced and organized multiple technical drawing and parts for manufacturing and future reference.
Fabricated a custom frame to fit a bicycle front suspension that had an 85cc motor and dirt bike swing arm; utilized balsa wood and uni-directional and weave carbon fiber prepreg.
Gained experience with Edgecam, welding, CNC machining, and working with various composites to manufacture the feathercycle in a machine shop.
Tested and inspected the product after manufacturing and assembly. Airplane Wing Optimization Project Spring 2015
Optimized the weight and cost of a carbon fiber airplane wing; gained experience in working with multiple variables, analyzing the impact of each variable, and determining the ideal geometry and methodology for optimizing an airplane wing.
Determined the number of layers and degree to which the carbon fiber layers were applied in order to achieve a safety factor of greater than 1; employed MATLAB to run simulations and provide safety factors using carbon fiber properties identified with alternating variables.
Femur Implant Project Spring 2015
Utilized Abaqus software to analyze femur bone stress in a knee transplant versus a healthy human femur. Band Brake Project Spring 2014
Collaborated on a team of 4 to design and analyze a cantilever brake that could stop a 2 horsepower motor.
Determined the forces needed via intensive analysis of component geometry.
Modeled the band brake in SOLIDWORKS after measuring the components; employed FEA and motion analysis to ensure proper functioning. Fabricated parts to produce the model.
