Interventional Radiology Technician Job Purpose: Promotes and restores patients' health by assisting in the clinical procedural process; collaborating with physicians, nurses and multidisciplinary team members; providing physical and psychological support to patients and family members. Fundamental Job Duties:
Reports to Clinical Manager and Physicians
Identifies and assists with efficient and effective patient care requirements throughout the procedure experience.
Establishes a compassionate environment by providing support to patients and families.
Promotes patient's independence through teaching guided by physician or nurse; help patient and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
Maintains safe and clean working environment. Maintain procedural/medical supplies and equipment.
Follows infection-control requirements ensuring patient and team member safety.
Notifying proper personnel of supply issues or needs, equipment conditions and office needs.
Maintains and monitors procedural supply inventory by checking stock; anticipating needed supplies; ordering supplies; verifying receipt of supplies. Notifies physician of any supply shortages or issues. Communicates with Medical Supply Representatives as needed.
Maintains a cooperative relationship among team members by communicating information; responding to requests; building rapport; participating in problem-solving methods.
Detailed description
Angiogram Procedures Prepare the procedure room, equipment and C-arm. Safely operate equipment following manufacturer guidelines.
Assist nurse with procedure supplies and preparation of procedure room.
Assist nurse to prepare the patient for procedure.
Educate the patient regarding expected procedural events
Demonstrate proper patient positioning for specific angiogram procedure.
Demonstrate proper sterile technique and recovery throughout procedure and if a break occurs. Open sterile supplies and set up procedure back table.
Scrub and Assist physician during the procedure, at procedure bedside, performing complex diagnostic and therapeutic angiogram procedures.
Operate and run Fluoroscopy equipment as well as any equipment needed during interventional angioplasty
Assist physician and nurse in providing for patient safety and support.
Prioritize patient and physician needs during the procedure. Assist with any emergency care needs as directed.
Apply pressure at the puncture site to achieve hemostasis.
Assist in transporting patient on and off the procedure exam table.
Help to transport patient to recovery, assist in/provide recovery care as directed.
Prepare the procedure room for the next procedure/day. Mop the floor and clean equipment. Discard trash in appropriate locations.
Save, upload and store C-Arm images from each procedure daily or as needed.
Oversee and delegate to MA staff as needed.
Daily/as needed Provide assistance and appropriate lunch/breaks to other Clinical/IRT staff members as directed.
Upload and back up of fluoroscopy and ultrasound images.
Maintain PACS system and images stored.
Restock and upkeep of procedure supplies, inventory and expiration dates.
End of day cleaning and break down procedure room to allow Housekeeping to mop and terminal clean.
Clean and maintain equipment. Call for service/Tech for break/fix issues and follow through.
Assist the Clinical Manager in monitoring radiation exposure. Ensure the proper placement and daily wear of badges. Perform routine badge exchange.
Assist/perform patient chart monitoring for procedure documentation and shredding.
Recovery/Pre-operative Care Provide instruction and education to the patient before the procedure.
Assisting in recovery care of patient dependent upon type of procedure performed and as required by physician following established policies and procedures.
Provide support to recovery staff in the maintenance of puncture site. One Tech remains on-site until the last patient is discharged.
Provide for patient and family needs as appropriate. Administer appropriate care following orders as requested by physicians.
Communicate with nurse, team members and physician of on-going patient care needs.
Assist with and react appropriately to any emergency care needs of patient, work with entire team to manage patient care.
Supplies Notify proper personnel for supply needs or issues.
Unpack supplies when received, check packing slip for completeness, notify correct personnel if there are discrepancies. Breaking down boxes as necessary.
Maintain packing slips for accounting.
Reconcile daily patient charges with the nursing log book and inventory system adjusting as needed.
Maintain and update eCW Inventory system working with Clinical Manager adding/updating new or existing products. Participate in Quarterly Inventory count.
Organize and restock procedural departments.
Daily ordering and monitoring of supply needs. Monitor expiration dates and contact Reps for trade or return.
Assist with weekly and monthly sterilizer care and cleaning.
Requirements of position:
Active BLS and ACLS certification
Ability to work Full-Time with occasional approved over-time, may require early morning or later evening duties depending on assigned position and unforeseen patient care needs
Ability to routinely lift 25-50lbs.
Ability to push/pull patient/equipment on wheels
Ability to assist in patient lifting
Able to bend and stand for extended periods of time
Proficiency with EMR
