Position Title: Communications Officer (Entry Level) Salary: $26.47 per hour
Job Description The City of Perrysburg is currently accepting applications for an Entry Level Communications Officer. Applicants must complete a City employment application and take the National Testing Network (NTN) test for Emergency Communications, along with a typing test and ECOMM computer simulations.
Veterans with an honorable discharge can receive a 5% addition to their passing score by submitting a DD214 form.
Summary of Duties: Under the supervision of the Support Services Manager and Shift Supervisor, the Communications Officer handles radio, telephone, data communications, and clerical duties within the Police Division. Responsibilities include operating the base radio console to dispatch safety services (Police & Fire), operating LEADS terminals for verifying vehicle and personal data, maintaining records of calls, and monitoring radio frequencies. The officer also interacts with the public, provides directions, and activates emergency systems like the Severe Weather Siren and Mass Contact Notification System.
Communications Officers must be available for varied hours, holidays, overtime, and emergency call-ins. Regular attendance is essential, and the position is designated as "Non-Exempt" under the Fair Labor Standards Act, entitling officers to overtime or compensatory time.
Essential Functions:
Answer and record calls, addressing public inquiries about issues and events Dispatch safety services and coordinate backup when needed Operate LEADS terminals for vehicle, driver, and record verification Maintain logs and records for police and fire personnel Monitor and dispatch for Police, Fire, and other City Divisions Provide information on special events and community directions Assist police officers with processing female prisoners when needed Activate emergency weather alert systems Other Responsibilities: Perform any additional duties as assigned by the appropriate authority.
Qualifications High School Diploma or GED Combination of education and experience providing relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities Required Certifications:
LEADS certification and National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) training (ICS-100, ICS-200, ICS-700, and ICS-800)* Skills and Abilities:
Strong written and verbal communication skills Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills Ability to use sound judgment, remain calm under stress, and respond to unusual situations Proficient in typing and data organization Skill in problem definition, data collection, and drawing valid conclusions Maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and effective public interactions Supplemental Information To qualify, applicants must pass the NTN test for Emergency Communications and complete a City of Perrysburg employment application.
