Under general supervision, is responsible for performing general duty police work to protect life and property through crime prevention and law enforcement; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work (Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
- Patrols an assigned area for the prevention of crime and the enforcement of laws and regulations;
- Responds to radio calls for police service; provides assistance to citizens and law enforcement personnel as requested;
- Appears at scenes of crimes or disorders and maintains control of individuals, evidence, and area involved;
- Regulates traffic and issues citations as required;
- Investigates reports of crime and complaints, and/or conditions that may contribute to crime or delinquency;
- Investigates traffic accidents involving pedestrians, vehicles, and other property; completes accident reports;
- Intervenes in disputes to protect the public and maintain order;
- Identifies, collects, and protects evidence used in the commission of crime or traffic offense;
- Apprehends and/or charges persons responsible for criminal or traffic violations;
- Transports or arranges for transportation of suspects to various locations including, but not limited to, police headquarters, hospitals, and county jail;
- Prepares for prosecution cases of criminal and/or traffic offenses involving individuals who have been arrested or detained;
- Appears in court as testifying officer, serves subpoenas, assists in enforcement of court orders;
- Facilitates medical or mental health treatment and social services for individuals, and arranges the transportation of individuals to these facilities;
- Prepares official report of facts gathered and submits to superiors for appropriate action;
- Interacts with members of the community to promote public safety and crime prevention;
- Uses computer systems to complete reports, identify crime patterns, analyze the nature of crime and disorders; obtains information relevant to crime control and prevention, and other administrative tasks;
- Responds to natural and man-made disasters as a first responder; manages evacuations, and uses protective equipment where hazardous materials may be present
Minimum Qualifications
- Completion of the twelfth school grade. Substitution(s): A certificate of high school equivalence (GED) will be accepted in lieu of the educational requirement.
- Applicants must be at least 20 years old when applying, and at least 21 years old at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license when applying and a valid Ohio motor vehicle operator's license at time of appointment.
- A citizen of the United States.
