Mechanical Engineer
JOB DUTIES: Lead the design and development of the mechanical systems and components necessary for the Direct Air Capture (DAC) process including designing airflow systems, vacuum systems, heating sorbent systems, regeneration of CO2 systems, carbon capture units, and storage systems. Job duties include: Utilize AutoCAD and SolidWorks to create detailed 2D and 3D models of the mechanical components and systems involved in DAC; Perform heat transfer simulations and analyses using software like ANSYS Fluent, COMSOL, and Simscale including evaluate thermal behavior, heat distribution, and heat transfer rates within the DAC system and optimize heat exchanger designs to maximize heat transfer efficiency and minimize energy losses; Conduct pressure drop simulations to analyze fluid flow characteristics, pressure distribution, and pressure losses across the DAC system; Optimize sorbent position and ducting layouts to minimize pressure drop and ensure efficient flow distribution; Designing, performing engineering calculations and analyzing for mechanical systems, including gears, bearings, shafts, springs, and mechanisms); Research, evaluate, and select appropriate technologies and equipment for DAC, considering efficiency, scalability, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact as well as explore different absorption or adsorption technologies and regeneration and heating processes; Performing stress analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and fluid analysis using computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); Develop prototypes of mechanical systems and conduct rigorous testing to evaluate their performance, efficiency, reliability and life cycle analysis while iterating designs based on test results and optimize system components for improved performance; Collaborate with electrical/control systems engineers and chemists to integrate mechanical systems with other components of the DAC process to ensure seamless integration and compatibility of all subsystems; Select appropriate materials for construction of mechanical components, considering factors like high temperature, vacuum pressure, corrosion resistance, durability, and cost; Work closely with manufacturing partners or in-house teams to ensure efficient production and assembly of the mechanical systems; Analyze and optimize mechanical systems to improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance overall system performance as well as identify areas for improvement and implement design changes; Ensure compliance with regulations and standards related to mechanical systems (i.e., ASME, ISO, ANSI, OSHA) and industry best practices; Address safety concerns associated with mechanical systems and develop safety protocols; Maintain accurate documentation of design specifications, engineering drawings, testing procedures, and project progress; Prepare technical reports and presentations to communicate findings, challenges, and recommendations to stakeholders; Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineers, scientists, and project managers; Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and leadership to junior engineers; Stay updated with DAC and advancements in related fields, and engage in R&D activities; and, Identify opportunities for innovation and contribute to the company’s IP portfolio. Salary range $114,546-154,000/year.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (foreign equivalent degrees accepted) and three (3) years of experience in the Mechanical Engineering field including: Using CAD and analysis softwares to create 2D and 3D models, draft designs, and perform simulations; Selecting appropriate materials for specific applications and utilize material testing
techniques and standards; Applying ASME, ISO, ANSI, OSHA to ensure compliance in design and manufacturing processes; Designing and performing engineering calculations and analyzing for mechanical systems, including gears, bearings, shafts, springs, and mechanisms); Performing stress analysis using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and fluid analysis using computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD); Defining manufacturing constraints and optimizing designs for manufacturability; and, Designing industrial size equipment and fluid handling systems using fluid dynamics, flow analysis, pressure drop calculations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing techniques CNC, waterjet, sheet metal manufacturing and lathe.
