Position: Firefighter-Paramedic (Entry Level or Lateral)

The City of St. Marys, Ohio, is seeking candidates to fill a Firefighter-Paramedic position. Applicants must complete the NTN testing and submit scores to the City by September 27, 2024. PHQ must also be completed by the deadline. Late submissions will not be considered.

Applicants must submit a completed Civil Service Application along with all necessary documentation to Sue Backs at the City of St. Marys, 101 E. Spring Street, St. Marys, OH 45885, by the deadline.

Applicants must pass all required tests before qualifying for further consideration. Those who pass may qualify for additional credit, including up to 20% extra credit on the exam for the following:

Ohio residents who have completed service in the uniformed services and were honorably discharged or transferred to reserve duty may qualify for a 20% extra credit on the exam.
Members in good standing of a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the Ohio National Guard, who have completed entry-level training, may receive a 15% credit.
Applicants with Ohio Firefighter I or II certifications can receive additional credit, with Firefighter II certifications earning 10% and Firefighter I certifications earning 5%.
Applicants with EMT certifications granted by Ohio EMS may receive extra credit, with EMT-Paramedic certification earning 10%, EMT-Intermediate certification earning 7%, and EMT-Basic certification earning 5%.
Veteran applicants will receive priority in ranking over non-veterans who earn the same score.

Lateral Hire: Applicants offered employment as a Lateral Hire will be eligible for prior service credit for vacation accrual and wage scale placement. Applicants must meet the following requirements:

Full-time employment as a Firefighter-Paramedic for at least one year
No disciplinary action resulting in suspension or loss of pay in the past 12 months
Ohio Paramedic and Firefighter II certifications
Valid Ohio drivers license
Prior service credit will be applied for vacation accrual and wage scale placement upon documented receipt from the previous employer. The maximum vacation balance is capped at 159 hours, and no applicant will be placed above step 4 on the wage scale.

Examination Details: The exam is administered through the National Testing Network. Registration is required before attending a testing facility or taking the test online. Testing locations include Edison Community College in Piqua, Ohio, and Rhodes State College in Lima, Ohio. Salary Information:

Firefighter-Paramedic: $1,096.86/week to $1,210.24/week
Firefighter: $1,037.45/week to $1,150.91/week

City of St. Marys Fire Department: The department provides fire suppression, EMS, public education, and fire prevention services to St. Marys and surrounding areas. In 2023, the department responded to 340 fire calls and 1,270 EMS/rescue calls. The department has 13 full-time employees, all of whom are Ohio Certified Paramedics.

Job Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old by the date of the exam and under 41 years old at the time of appointment
Ohio citizenship or valid permanent resident card
High school diploma or GED
Valid Ohio drivers license with a clean driving record
Ability to read and speak English
Applicants must obtain Ohio Firefighter Level II and Ohio EMT certification within one year, with Paramedic certification required within 12 months of completing Paramedic training.

Disqualification Criteria:

Convictions of a felony, certain misdemeanors, or drug-related offenses
History of excessive drug or alcohol use, except for specific cases outlined
Certain sex or violent crime convictions
OVI, reckless driving, or driving privilege revocations within the last five years
Dishonorable discharge from employment for misconduct
False information or omissions during the application process
All applicants for safety-sensitive positions are subject to pre-hire drug testing. The City reserves the right to disqualify applicants at any stage of the process.
