Experience

(3) Three years of inpatient coding experience working in patient abstract coding preferred.

Must have working knowledge of ICD codes, (CPT) Current Procedural Terminology, and(E&M) Evaluation and Management codes.

Certification:
The following are recognized certifications with appropriate level of experience:
CCS-(P), Certified Coding Specialist-Physician
CPC-Certified Professional Coder
or
Registered Health information Technician (RHIT), Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) are also acceptable eligible or certified
Credentials from AAPC or AHIMA are also acceptable.

Duties included but not limited to:
Medical Coder shall recognize potential problems and assist in the resolution of problems between patients, providers, and clinics and the Medical Treatment Facility (MTF). Receive all external referral requests, coordinate with MTF staff and vendors for sources of service. Through patient interviews, referrals and/or consultation with medical staff and conducting extensive research coordinate patient referrals to appropriate sources for care and/or other assistance. Locate medical care requested which is not available in the MTF. Coordinate and/or obtain necessary documents for exceptions. Electronically transmit consults to the Managed Care Support Contractor (MCSC) when appropriate. MCSC shall be identified by the government staff during Contractor orientation.
