The City of DeKalb is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic. Candidates must complete the following by October 27, 2024, at 11:59 PM CST:
FireTEAM exam and the PHQ City of DeKalb Application Salary Range: $71,587 $101,715

Department Overview: DeKalb is a university community, and the Fire Department serves a population of over 16,000 students and 40,290 residents. The department holds an ISO Rating of 2 and covers a primary response area of 16 square miles, with an additional 55 square miles served by contract through the DeKalb Fire Protection District. In 2023, the department responded to 7,684 emergency calls, 82% of which were medical. The department is staffed by 71 full-time sworn personnel, including a Fire Chief, 2 Deputy Chiefs, and 2 civilian employees. A new station and increased staffing are planned for 2025.

Job Requirements:

State of Illinois (IDPH) Paramedic License (EMT-P) or enrollment in an accredited EMT-P training program (completion within 3 months of application). Completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) with Ladder Climb Certification from a licensed agency within 12 months before the conditional employment offer. Hiring Process: The process includes submitting an application, a written exam, oral interview, background investigation, and polygraph exam. Psychological and medical exams are conducted upon a conditional offer of employment.
Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: No felony convictions or crimes involving moral turpitude, as specified in Section 5/10-2.1-6 Part C of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
Driving Disqualifiers: A valid drivers license is required.
Residency Requirement: Must reside within a 40-mile radius of the DeKalb Fire Department at 700 Pine Street, DeKalb, Illinois 60115, after 15 months of employment.
Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 21 years of age but less than 35 years of age before taking any test leading to employment as a Firefighter/Paramedic, unless exempt under Section 5/10-2.1-6 of the Board of Fire and Police Commissioners Act.
