Who We Are

The Greater Valley YMCA (GVYMCA or GVY) is a volunteer-led, nonprofit, community organization. The Y is committed to strengthening community by positively changing lives every day. At each of our branches, we concentrate our efforts in three areas: Healthy Living, Youth Development, and Social Responsibility. For over 100 years, the Y has made tangible differences in the communities of Allentown, Bethlehem, Catasauqua, Easton, Forks, Nazareth, those comprising the Slate Belt region and the Lehigh Valley as a whole. Founded as individual YMCAs as early as 1897, the following branches of the Greater Valley Y merged together between 2010 and 2015: the Nazareth YMCA, the Suburban North Family YMCA, the Family YMCA of Easton, Phillipsburg & Vicinity and the Bethlehem YMCA. In 2014, the Forks YMCA Education Center was established. The Slate Belt branch was opened in 2015. In January 2017, the Allentown YMCA joined the Greater Valley YMCA.

What We Are Looking For

We are looking for Aquatic Group Exercise Instructors to teach group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Our instructors effectively build social communities within the class and modifies classes as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.


A Day in the Life as an Aquatic Group Exercise Instructor

As an aquatic exercise instructor, you will be responsible helping impact the fitness and health needs of our members. We are looking for energetic and positive instructors who can build relationships with our members while safely teaching exercise classes.


Responsibilities As an Aquatic Group Exercise Instructor

  • Lead energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes, as directed by the supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Ask and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health and well-being.
  • Maintain current certifications, and pursue ongoing fitness/wellness education and knowledge of trends to provide research-based information and support to members.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with members; help members connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observe and adjust approach to support all participants capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrate achievement of program participants related to program or personal goals, mastering of specific skills, or overall health and well-being.
  • Keep accurate class attendance records.
  • Maintain organization of equipment and pool deck.
  • Assist with emergency situations as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Expected Hours Per Week

  • Part-time
  • Flexible schedule


Pay Range

  • $11.00 - $25.00 per class


Where You Would Be Working

  • GVYMCA Nazareth Branch: 33 S. Main St, Nazareth, PA 18064

Requirements

  • Nationally recognized Group Fitness Instructor certification (ACE, AFAA, NASM, or similar) or YMCA Foundations of Group Exercise certification
  • Certification in areas of expertise and/or Specialty certification for registered trademark classes (Silver Sneakers, RIPPED, Zumba, POUND, and similar classes)
  • One (1) or more years experience teaching group exercise classes
  • Working knowledge of strength, free weight, and cardio-respiratory equipment
  • Ability to perform essential functions
  • Ability to think independently and take direction
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting
  • Good organizational and leadership skills
  • Good analytical/critical thinking
  • CPR, First Aid and AED certifications are required within thirty (30) days of employment
  • Able to effectively communicate and build relationships with Y staff and members
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good customer service skills, high ethical standards, an appropriate professional image, and a team player
  • Must possess sound technical skills, analytical ability, good judgment skills, and a positive attitude
  • Bi-lingual English/Spanish preferred, but not required


Work Environment and Physical Demands

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:
    • climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, twist, reach with hands, sit, stand for an extended period, climb, walk, lift and/or move up to fifty pounds, have finger dexterity, grasp, perform repetitive motions, talk, hear, and have visual acuity
    • able to communicate using a computer and phone/smart device
  • The work is performed at an indoor location that is subject to high temperatures, high humidity, and loud noises
  • Teach up to ninety (90) minutes at a time in water that is 83-85 degrees
