About NYC Tourism + Conventions
We are the official destination marketing organization (DMO) and convention and visitors bureau (CVB) for the five boroughs of New York City. Our mission is to maximize travel and tourism opportunities throughout the City, build economic prosperity and spread the dynamic image of New York City around the world.
Summary: The Sports and Big Events Director will oversee and support the promotion of sports and big events within the organization. The responsibilities will include coordination within various internal departments to encourage strong communication and to ensure the creation of a unified approach and strategy. This will also include working with the companys Government Relations department in supporting interaction with City entities. The majority of the event portfolio will focus on sporting events but may also include other forms of big events that attract visitors and support the companys tourism goals (big events may include, but not be limited to, sectors such as arts, entertainment, conventions etc.). The candidate will report to the Chief Operating Officer and will interface with all areas of the organization.
Responsibilities: Sports Management and Consultation - A good knowledge of the sports industry and events, with the ability to consult on various sports details such as teams, facts, history, and calendars
- Ability to proactively build relationships with sports leagues, event promoters and event organizers to secure a positive image for NYC for future event opportunities
- Continue existing relationships with sports leagues and events in tandem with other departments such as Membership, Press & Marketing teams
- Serve as the primary point person for sports within the organization
City Relationship Coordination - Coordinate with relevant city agencies and officials such as City Hall, CECM, NYPD, FDNY, City Parks and
- Recreation, and Department of Transportation to ensure necessary support, reporting and compliance for events
- Work with companys Government Relations team to support communication with City Hall and City agencies
- Drafting of reports and meeting summaries
- Understanding requirements and needs of NYC and appropriate citywide agencies
- Familiarity of City permitting processes and key contacts withing the Citys structure
Project Management for Sports and Big Events - Work with internal teams to vet and analyze events
- Work with appropriate departments to ensure delivery and continuity of support services
- Effectively oversee projects with high sense of ownership, organization, and ability to multi-task
- Responsible for continuity and reporting of progress
- Ability to identify and communicate with necessary third parties
- Ensure communication within company departments by creating a unified approach and strategy
- Handle and coordinate informational calls or meetings
- Evaluate opportunities for relevance, as well as potential needs and expectations
- Take lead in managing identified opportunities for guiding hosting responsibilities
- Drafts, and if applicable, manages budgets and timelines for events
- Ensure compliance with all relevant rules and regulations for events and relationships
- Represent and manage existing promotional support and relationships for certain NYC annual events that support visitation such as, the NYC Marathon and US Tennis Open
- Continue existing relationships and communication channels with third party relationships
- Communication with necessary agencies and/or partners
- Managing of processes from start to finish while ensuring consistent attention, follow up and completion of projects
- Relationship management and handling of potential networking opportunities such as dinners, meetings, and other events
Business Skills and Strategies - Understanding of companys mission and ability to evaluate events based on how they align with our goal of overnight visitation
- Ability to anticipate partner needs
- Draft, manage and complete Bid applications or Request for Proposals when they are received as part of an Event Bid process (create response when received for external events eg. FIFA, DNC, Superbowl etc.)
- Ability to plan, organize and successfully support events such as parades, conferences, or other experiences
- If needed, draft and manage outgoing Request For Proposals (internal creation and release)
- Knowledge of tourism and company services to effectively delegate to appropriate internal department stakeholders such as marketing, press, convention, and destination services
- Potential site visits and assessments
Qualifications: - Bachelor's degree in sports management, event management, marketing, or a related field
- 5+ years of experience in sports event management, specifically in a major city
- Strong understanding of inter-agency workings and experience working with NYC agencies
- Strong understanding of sports
- Contacts within sports industry, event promoters/companies a plus
- Excellent project management skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines
- Ability to work autonomously, while also being team oriented
- Experience with City related events planning such as permitting a plus
- Experience with event planning and management
This position is based in New York City and may require some travel as well as evening and weekend work, as necessary. The successful candidate will have a proven track record of successfully promoting and supporting major events in a city and will have a deep understanding of the sports event industry and the key stakeholders involved. Annual Salary - $100,000 - $125,000
