Starts With Us (SWU) is a growing movement to empower Americans with the skills to overcome extreme cultural and political division and achieve lasting common-ground solutions to divisive issues. We take a forward-thinking approach, combining investments in storytelling and technology with offline movement-building to foster introspection, independent thinking, effective communication, and constructive cooperation across lines of difference at scale. Since launching in December 2021, the SWU community, which represents the 87% of Americans exhausted by political division, has grown to more than 1.5 million followers. What youll do:

As the Director, PR & Integrated Communications, you will be responsible for building mainstream awareness of SWU, leading high-impact campaigns and opportunistic newsjacking, landing highly visible earned media placements, and mobilizing millions of people to join the movement. Were looking for someone who is plugged into the 24/7 news cycle and cultural trends - from pop to politics - and has a track record of creatively and assertively growing brand relevance. The Director should have a sixth sense for identifying ownable, untold stories and generating earned media opportunities. Reporting directly to the CEO and regularly collaborating cross-functionally, you will also lead the development and execution of communications strategy, messaging and material development, and monitoring and reporting.

To find success in this role, you will:

  • Develop and execute bold marketing and communications strategies, including 360 integrated campaigns to grow awareness of SWU
  • Collaborate with growth, social/digital, movement, partnerships, and creative teams to develop, pitch, and execute campaigns that drive the news cycle, insert SWU into the zeitgeist, and, in success, become long-term movement programs
  • Lead all earned media activities, including overseeing a news bureau and developing relationships with relevant reporters and influencers
  • Refine Starts With Us brand positioning and narrative, including key messages and talking points, and regularly update external materials for different audiences
  • Partner with Daniel Lubetzkys communications team to ensure alignment across all messaging and media occasions
  • Manage integrated projects and team, including a Communications Manager, agencies, freelancers, and vendors as needed to achieve communications goals
  • Oversee media monitoring to inform pitch efforts and ensure cross-functional team understands how SWU and related issues are showing up in the media
  • Own all communications reporting and make recommendations on how to optimize PR efforts and increase impact as SWU scales

Requirements

You are:

  • Passionate about the mission and goals of Starts With Us
  • Creative with the ability to proactively generate ideas both independently and collaboratively
  • Willing to take calculated risks and stir the pot in a way that positively positions a brand within the news cycle
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity, wading into new areas, and learning as you go
  • Entrepreneurial, resourceful, and relentlessly solutions-oriented
  • Accountable for your results and how those are achieved
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Able to manage multiple priorities and shift priorities based on needs
  • Comfortable in a remote work environment but willing to travel ~5 times a year for team gatherings, campaign activations, and media meetings
  • Someone who operates with kindness, transparency, integrity, and grit

You have:

  • 8+ years of experience working on a political campaign, in movement building or social impact, or another adjacent fast-paced communications role
  • Cultural insight and an understanding of the forces driving division in America today
  • An understanding of how issues appear in the news and how to communicate about such issues with sensitivity and without bias to a wide swath of Americans
  • Experience devising responsive campaigns to capitalize on timely news and events
  • Experience managing complex projects across an integrated team
  • Experience with reputation management and crisis communications and an understanding of the risks associated with political-adjacent communications campaigns
  • An understanding of the ever-evolving media landscape, including new outlets, distribution channels, and content formats
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Impeccable copywriting skills, capable of writing razor sharp, attention-grabbing headlines as well as nuanced long-form pieces
  • Experience building a brand that people love and evangelize
  • Familiarity with Muckrack, Cision, and other PR database tools
